EMCD - Energy Loss Magnetic Chiral Dichroism

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) was first proven for electrons in 2003 theoretically (C. Hebert und P. Schattschneider, Ultramicroscopy 96 (2003), pp. 463-468). Prior it was accesible only for X-ray spectroscopy. The experimental proof succedded 3 years later and found a big echo within the EELS-community. Since then the spatial resolution of EMCD was improved by TU Vienna from more than 200 nm to less than 1 nm. It is now possible to study the magnetic behaviour of interfacial atoms in magnetic multilayers.

One important research topic of the IFP is therefore the theoretical and experimental description of EMCD.
